So, wow! Turns out that I am an official blogger. Actually, I may have been one for a long time, but just didn’t know it! Our former website had a page that I updated every now and then. It was called “The Pastor’s Page.” Pretty original huh? Our new website…which I am now finally familiarizing myself with…has the same feature for me, but instead calls it a blog! What? I decided to google “blog” and it said something to the effect of “a regular updated webpage with information usually shared in conversational style.” Well, glory be! I immediately discovered that I had in fact been blogging all along and surprised even myself! In fairness and truth, before I was probably only a “bloger,” not a “blogger,” because I was a bit lax on the “regular update” part and maybe even sometimes a bit shaky on the “information.” But now that I am an official blogger, I shall work to improve my blogging skills. Here is some information shared in conversational style…
I love the connections between the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and The New Testament. I will share a neat connection with names. In Exodus, Moses meets GOD in the burning bush encounter. After some small talk about big things, Moses decides that he wants/needs to know GOD’s name. The basic thought behind a name is that by knowing someone’s name, then you can call on that person and gain their attention. Additionally though, especially in Bible times, names can also reveal something about the person as well. So, Moses requests GOD’s name, so he can call on HIM, understand HIM, and maybe even to try and control HIM just a wee bit. We human beings do seem to have that tendency, and I’m not saying its right. At any rate, GOD obliges Moses request for HIS name with ‘Yah.” I Am. Yep. Yah. Huh?
The answer that GOD gives to Moses translates into English as “I Am” or “I Will Be.” In Hebrew, it is “Yah.” I’m guessing that you and I are probably like Moses. Huh? How about something a little more dramatic…like “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” Instead GOD gives us “Yah,” which is not only easier to spell….it really is an awesome name if you think about it! GOD is effectively saying that HE cannot be described by a label. You may pick the description you understand best, but don’t ever think you got the whole picture. HE can be anything, everything, all things HE chooses… because HE is. Yah, period. So labels, schmabels. Ok, my loose translation. But, GOD is really saying to Moses, “I will be whatever you need me to be.” And so HE was! And so HE is! And so HE shall be! Now on to the rest of the Bible and The New Testament.
What do you need? Comforter, Counselor, Provider, Light, Lion, Lamb, Way, Truth, Life, Bread, Water, Resurrection, Vine, Anchor, Savior…a GOD to be? Well…HE is!!! HE would say to us in effect, “I AM all of those things.” And that last one is really the best of all. It is the tie between the Old and New. It is in fact the tie that holds everything together. You and I may know HIM best as Jesus, which is HIS Greek name. In Hebrew, it is Yeshua or Yahshua. We would maybe say, Joshua….but do you see it? Yah..shua….I AM SAVIOR. “Shua” in Hebrew is from the verb ” to save.” And so HE is! The GOD who is our ALL, gave us HIS Son as a sacrifice for our sins and to save us from eternal death. HE takes our place. HE pays the ransom price. HE sets us free! HE shows us that HE has power over life and death. HE wants us to be with HIM forever. HE was with Moses. HE is in Jesus. HE will be coming back. How can HE do all of that? How could it be? Because HE IS. A Living GOD of Unfailing Love. An Endless Saving Graceful GOD, who is everything we will ever need HIM to be….Wow….hope it makes you just wanna shout Hallelujah! Praise Yah. and there it is again 🙂
